B.H. Whipple Federal Building

Location: Fort Snelling, MN
Client: General Services Administration
Architect: DLR Group
Size: 132,000 sq. ft. remodel
Year Completed: 2002

This project included renovations on numerous floors and areas within the existing six story 550,000 square foot precast concrete and glass clad building built in 1969. The building remained occupied for the duration of the project while we performed asbestos abatement and completed new tenant spaces for various government agencies totaling approximately 24 percent of the existing building’s floor space.

One of the greatest challenges was completing the work while minimizing interruption to the existing agency’s services. Many mechanical and electrical shutdowns were required to upgrade the building’s services, all of which were coordinated with the affected agencies. We worked nights to complete the asbestos abatement work and the owner provided constant air monitoring to ensure a safe working environment for the building employees.
