The new magnetic resonance research facility was constructed to house four research magnets. The MRI research program had grown out of their previous facility located on East River Road. The new facility located on the northeast side of the campus incorporated the 4.0T and 9.4T magnets from the existing facility and added 4.7T and 7.0T magnets to meet their growing research program needs.
The structure included concrete spread footings with concrete block foundations, structural precast roof plank, combinations of wood framed and masonry structure above grade with brick and architectural precast veneer exterior, and EPDM sheet roofing. The project incorporated corrugated metal panels and a curved translucent panel canopy at the main entrance. Finishes included aluminum entrances, custom casework, laboratory casework, sterilizing equipment, drywall systems, acoustical ceilings, tile, carpet, resilient flooring, special floor coatings, and access flooring. The site work included landscaping, asphalt paving, curb and gutter, wrought iron fencing, and lawn irrigation. The mechanical and electrical systems were specialized for the facility, which restricted ferrous metals inside the designated 5 gauss line for each magnet.
