Guided by principles of the LEED rating system, the McKnight Foundation offices were constructed in the historic Gold Medal Flour building.  Sustainable materials were key to the success of the design.  The lobby features a staircase constructed out of reclaimed timbers from an old barn in northern Minnesota.  The millwork and wood doors were constructed from logs reclaimed from the bottom of Lake Superior.  Recycled rubber flooring and recycled carpet were used as an alternative to traditional flooring materials and insulation manufactured from recycled denim jeans was used as acoustic insulation in a ceiling feature.  The mission and culture of the McKnight Foundation was truly reflected in the design and construction of their unique office space.
